Introducing: Another Book Club Playlist
A playlist as chaotic as my "To Be Read" list.
In the latest episode of The Rehearsal, “Pilot’s Code”, Nathan Fielder explores the mindset of Captain Sully, the pilot who after hitting a flock of geese in 2009 landed a commercial flight safely in the Hudson River. Fielder discovers that the most cited band in Sully’s memoir, Highest Duty, is Evanescence. The chorus of the group’s most popular song, “Bring Me to Life”, clocks around 23 seconds. Based on audio recordings from the accident, this is the same estimated duration of silence in a pivotal moment in the cockpit during the emergency landing. With Sully’s iPod being found in the wreckage, Fielder theorizes Sully listened to the empowering chorus to bring emotional clarity in crisis.
Whether actually referenced in the book itself or my own connection I am forming, long time readers know that I frequently link relevant music in my posts. Just as Fielder’s discovery demonstrates, there is often more behind mentions of music in books. Writing is a medium where word choice and length matter, so whatever fills the pages must have some level of importance to the author to be mentioned at all. Musical references in books be it bands, song titles, or lyrics, play a crucial role in setting scene, time, tone, and character development.
This is all to say that I am pleased to officially share Another Book Club Playlist. As part of being back on Substack this year, I wanted to finally collate all of the songs previously referenced here into a playlist, and will continue adding to the playlist in future posts. The range of genres is definitely chaotic, but that’s the beauty of reading books like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Carnality, or When You Are Engulfed in Flames. Check out the playlist by clicking the link for your preferred music streaming provider below.
Happy reading (and listening!) 😊
Great idea! Thanks for sharing!
